Celiac Survival Tips

🥚

Owakudani black eggs are safe

The famous black eggs at Owakudani volcanic valley are just plain boiled eggs blackened by sulfur. Naturally gluten-free. ~¥500 for 4 eggs.

🏨

Contact ryokan 4-6 weeks ahead

Traditional kaiseki is prepared course-by-course. Contact the ryokan well in advance, explain celiac disease, and request GF soy sauce (tamari). Luxury ryokans accommodate better.

🍱

Avoid station bento boxes

Ekiben (station lunch boxes) almost always contain hidden gluten in sauces. Pack your own food from Tokyo convenience stores before the train.

🥢

Bring tamari and snacks

Hakone is a small town with limited GF options. Carry portable tamari, nuts, and protein bars as backup. Nukafuku in Gora sells GF soy sauce packets.

⏰

Restaurants close early

Most restaurants in Hakone and Kawaguchiko close by 7:30-8:00 PM. Plan your meals early and don't rely on finding food late at night.

🗾

Japanese allergy card is essential

Less English spoken here than Tokyo. A Japanese allergy card is critical. Key phrase: 'Watashi wa komugi arerugi desu' (I have a wheat allergy).
